Age Differences: Dating Someone Older or Much Younger

Age seems to play an important role in relationships and a large gap in years can mean more differences than just the time you’ve spent on the planet compared to your partner. It also could mean differences in modes of communication, interests, and lifestyle. But that shouldn’t scare you away from what could potentially be a very loving and nurturing relationship. Instead of focusing on your differences, try highlighting your similarities. Make it a priority in your relationship to spend time on activities that you both enjoy. It will make the difference in age seem much less significant if you have a foundation based on common interests and understanding.

Fresh Perspective
The variation in age could actually be an advantage and strength in your relationship if you let it. Spending time with a person who is older or younger than you by a good amount of years can offer you newfound perspective on life and even broaden your own horizons. Having a younger partner can help reconnect you to a more vibrant lifestyle and actually leave you feeling younger yourself! On the same note, there is much to be learned from a person who has been around the dating block a time or two. More than likely your older partner is passed the “game” of dating which makes connecting with them easier than it can sometimes be with your peers.

Maintain Balance
Going out of your comfort zone and “giving in” a little is an important element to every relationship – no matter if you’re the same generation or 15 years apart. You shouldn’t do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, but if you’re dating a guy who is 10 years younger than you, try going out to the club with him once a month. Similarly, if you happen to be with a man who is older than you are then give up one or two Saturday nights on the town with your girlfriends to go on a nice dinner date with him. It’s important to keep a balance in the relationship in order to show that you respect your partner and where they’re coming from.

Age is Just a Number
One of the most important things to remember is that age really is just a number. Your friends and family may be a little uneasy about the situation at first but take the time to really introduce them to the person your partner is. Try not to get too defensive if people seem uncomfortable with your relationship at first – it’s a natural human reaction to second-guess things at times. But as long as you are comfortable and happy in your relationship with your partner then it shouldn’t matter whether they’re 25 or 65.
